Trigeminal Neuralgia is a pain that is described as among the most acute known to mankind. It is also known as tic douloureux. It is a chronic pain condition that causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like face pain that lasts anywhere from a few seconds to as long as 2 minutes per episode. The condition is characterized by pain often accompanied by a brief facial spasm or tic. Pain distribution is unilateral and follows the sensory distribution of cranial nerve V, typically radiating to the maxillary (V2) or mandibular (V3) area. If you have trigeminal neuralgia, attacks of such pain are frequent and can often seem unbearable. These painful attacks can be spontaneous, but they may also be provoked by even mild stimulation of your face, including brushing your teeth, shaving or putting on makeup. Trigeminal neuralgia is considered by many to be among the most painful of conditions and has been labeled the suicide disease, due to the significant numbers of people taking their own lives because they were unable to have their pain controlled with medications or surgery.

Trigeminal neuralgia affects the trigeminal nerve, one of the largest nerves in the head. There is some evidence that the disorder runs in families, perhaps because of an inherited pattern of blood vessel formation. It usually occurs after the age of 70 and is unusual in anyone under the age of 50. Although sometimes debilitating, the disorder is not life-threatening. It is a disorder of the trigeminal nerve, which is the fifth and largest cranial nerve. The pain of trigeminal neuralgia may occur in a honestly small area of your face, or it may spread rapidly over a wider area. A less common form of the disorder called “Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia” may cause less intense, constant, dull burning or aching pain, sometimes with occasional electric shock-like stabs. It affects women three times more frequently than men. This condition may also occur in younger people with multiple sclerosis. Two to four percent of patients with TN, usually younger, have evidence of multiple sclerosis, which may hurt either the trigeminal nerve or other related parts of the brain.

Causes of Trigeminal neuralgia

The common causes of Trigeminal neuralgia include the following:

The cause of the pain usually is due to contact between a normal artery or vein and the trigeminal nerve at the base of your brain.

Drinking.

The cause of the pain usually is due to contact between a normal artery or vein and the trigeminal nerve at the base of your brain.

Physical nerve hurt or stress may be the initial trigger for trigeminal neuralgia.

Sometimes, the cause of trigeminal neuralgia is a blood vessel or small tumor pressing on the nerve.

Disorders such as multiple sclerosis (an inflammatory disease affecting the brain and spinal cord), certain forms of arthritis, and diabetes (high blood sugar) may also cause trigeminal neuralgia, but a cause is not always identified.

Symptoms of Trigeminal neuralgia

Some symptoms related to Trigeminal neuralgia are as follows:

Pain is brief and paroxysmal.

Increased sensitivity of the skin or numbness of the affected skin area (feeling similar to a local anesthetic, such as a Novocaine shot).

Difficulty sleeping.

An attack of trigeminal neuralgia can last from a few seconds to about a minute.

Loss of appetite.

Stabbing facial pain.

Jaw pain.

Impaired function of affected body part due to pain, or muscle weakness due to motor nerve hurt.

Treatment of Trigeminal neuralgia

Here is list of the methods for treating Trigeminal neuralgia:

Medicines such as anticonvulsants and tricyclic antidepressants.

Mild over-the-counter analgesics such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen may be helpful for mild pain. Narcotic analgesics such as codeine may be needed for a small time to control severe pain.

Doctors may sometimes prescribe other medications, such as lamotrignine (Lamictal) or gabapentin (Neurontin).

Pain may be treated long-term with an opioid such as methadone in some patients, but due to the nature of the neuralgia, traditional analgesics typically have negligible effect.

Pain specialists use invasive therapy, including nerve blocks as well as nerve destruction, and nerve decompression techniques, to treat trigeminal neuralgia

If medication fails to relieve pain or produces intolerable side effects such as excess fatigue, surgical treatment may be recommended.

Chiropractic is a modern health care system based on the following premises:

1) The nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) control ALL other systems of the body.

2) Mechanic misalignments and distortions to the spine (known as Subluxations) can interfere with the body’s ability to govern and heal itself.

3) The body has the capacity to heal itself, given adequate rest, nutrition, and a fully functional nervous system (providing that no irreparable tissue hurt has occurred).

4) Chiropractic is the art, science and philosophy or restoring normal nerve and mechanical function to the body, promoting a normalisation of physiological and healing processes.

WHY IS THE SPINE Vital?

The spine is the framework which supports and protects the spinal cord – the most intimate and delicate control mechanism of the body. Most nerves pass from the spinal cord to the various muscles, glands, organs and bones.

The spine is made up of 24 moveable bones, 23 discs (which act as shock absorbers and allow movement to occur). Thirty-one pairs of nerves exit the spine.

Because of the spine’s complexity and abundance of ligaments and joints, its normal movements are easily disrupted. Falls, incorrect posture, mental stress, repetitive movements, sporting activities and even illness itself may cause disruption to the normal mechanics of the spine potentially causing back pain, including lower back pain and neck pain. These areas of abnormal movement are what chiropractors call subluxations.

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Subluxations have several possible components: disrupted joint movement, nerve irritation, muscle spasm or weakness either at the site of the subluxations or along the course of the irritated nerve. Because nerves send energy to organs, a subluxation can very easily affect health and wellbeing, as has been demonstrated in hundreds of research projects over the last century. Due to the lifestyle we now lead, Subluxations are very common and do not always produce pain or other obvious symptoms (much like heart disease and tooth decay has a silent phase of pathology). But, subluxations can lead to such problems as lower back pain, upper back pain and neck pain.  Spinal degeneration can occur when chronic subluxations are left uncorrected.

CHIROPRACTIC BACK PAIN TREATMENT

Chiropractors analyse the spine for subluxations and, if found, do a special procedure called an adjustment . This back pain treatment is a gentle and safe procedure, which in many cases takes just a few moments. The vast majority of people find this back pain treatment a comfortable experience, feeling a sense of release at the same time. Some techniques utilise the joint’s ability to cavitate (pop), although there are many other techniques which are equally as effective at normalising nerve function.

WELLNESS CARE

Once better nerve function has been restored to the spine and the body has had the opportunity to heal properly, it is vital that it be maintained. The physical, mental and chemical stresses that we expose our body to these days, easily overwhelm the nervous system and lead to a downward pattern of health which can lead to recurring back pain, including lower back pain, upper back pain or neck pain.   Wellness care or regular checkups will allow your spine to function optimally following chiropractic back pain treatment, offering your body the best chance of feeling and functioning well.

In addition, your chiropractor may advise you on exercises, nutrition and preventive factors related to work, posture and lifestyle.Article with thanks for Back Pain Directory contributors.

Is Yoga an Effective Treatment for Back Pain

With its traditional emphasis on the integration of spine, mind and spirit, yoga provides an brilliant form of back pain relief. In fact, a recent US survey revealed yoga instruction and practice to be among the most successful of all back pain treatments for people who were not incapacitated by their back pain. And those participants who were troubled by osteoarthritis, neck pain and scoliosis found it particularly effective.

The word yoga means \’unity\’ or \’harmony\’. Yoga is a way of healing the body through exercises that combine postures, movements and breathing techniques.

To the extent that stretching and strengthening your body is helpful – and I believe this beyond a doubt – yoga instruction can be an brilliant treatment for back pains. To the extent that stress contributes to back pain yoga instruction can bring significant relief.

The yoga philosophy of never forcing or straining, and of moving in a fluid, meditative manner, makes brilliant sense for people with back problems. But yoga philosophy also encompasses the harmony of mind, body and spirit – a concept that is hard for some back pain sufferers to grasp, or to take seriously. Although yoga traces its history back to the Hindu culture of India, it is not a religion.

A few of the US survey participants learned yoga entirely on their own, from books and articles. But those who were helped the most got started with professional and personalized instruction. Not all yoga teachers have the experience or the desire to work effectively with people who report a history of back problems. Some of them, but, possess advanced degrees in exercise physiology and may be especially qualified to prescribe exercise. An vital determinant of success is the instructor\’s willingness to modify the therapy to suit your needs.

If yoga instruction is available where you live, drop by the school or studio and speak to an instructor. You may get a chance to see the instructor in action, and determine whether you feel you\’ll get the kind of intelligent, individual attention that you were hoping to find.

Before I extol yoga any further, but, I must interject a note of caution: Many formal yoga positions are perilous to attempt during any episode of pain. This is especially right for just-recovering back sufferers.

At least two regular yoga positions could really cause considerable injury to your back if you tried to perform them while you were in pain, or before you had developed the necessary flexibility. One is the Cobra, which calls for you to lie on your stomach and arch your back by raising your head and chest. The other is the Plough, in which you lie on your back, then raise your straightened legs (ouch!) up and over your head, until you can touch your toes behind your head.

Here\’s one yoga exercise that you can perform anywhere, as it involves nothing more than deep breathing to help you relax and tone your abdominal muscles:

Start by taking a deep breath from your abdomen. (Place your fingers on your belly to convince yourself that it – and not just your chest – is expanding.)

Keep inhaling through your nose for 6 seconds.

Hold the air inside your lungs for 3 seconds.

Exhale through your mouth for 7 seconds. As you do so, let yourself go limp.

Repeat this series of steps a few times, alternating the deep breaths with normal breaths (in order to avoid the risk of hyperventilating).

Five minutes spent in this kind of deep, relaxed breathing can make you feel both invigorated and relaxed. Try it during your peak work hours, and judge the effect for yourself.

Piriformis Sciatica – Treatment For Sciatica

The largest muscle in the buttocks is called the gluteus maximus and tucked away under it is the piriformis. Very often that is where sciatica pain can originate and cause agony.

Although it originates there, it can travel down the longest nerve of the body and can cause discomfort, if not agony, anywhere down the leg all the way to the foot and toes.

The pain can range from a mild numbness to scream generating agony. The piriformis muscle is attached to the lump of bone on the side of the thigh and its job is to rotate the hip joint. This muscle can become irritated by many things. Injury, terrible posture or even over use during sports.

The troublesome sciatic nerve is the longest and fattest nerve in the human body and runs all the way from the foot, up the leg and into the spinal column at the lower back. Usually the nerve passes under the piriformis muscle but in some cases, it really goes through the muscle and this can cause problems.

The sciatic nerve can become inflamed and painful it the muscle compresses it causing sciatica. The piriformis muscle squeezing the nerve is not the only cause of sciatica.

Other factors such as disc herniation can trigger the problem but when the muscle is the cause the condition is known as piriformis sciatica or piriformis syndrome.

Whatever the cause, the symptoms can be similar. Shooting pains down the leg, numbness in the toes and foot or general pain in various parts of the leg where the nerve passes.

Often some gentle stretching exercises can help with the sciatica but very often people forget to do the exercises once the pain goes, only remembering them once they have another bout of discomfort. Other forms of treatment like hot and cold compresses and massage can certainly help.

Anti inflammatory drugs can relieve the pain but of course do nothing to address the cause of the problem. As a final resort, surgery can sometimes be successful but it is best to explore less drastic solutions that may help with the problem first.
