Pregnancy Sciatica – What Treatments Are Available?

There are a lot of changes going on in the body during pregnancy and unfortunately not all of these are pleasant ones. Pregnancy sciatica is one of the uncomfortable problems that can occur while pregnant.

Not all women suffer from the effects of sciatica while pregnant but for the ones that do it can range from being a mild tingling sensation to a crippling pain from the lower back and down the leg to to foot.

If it occurs it usually appears at about the 3rd month of the pregnancy and is due to various reasons.

1: The growing baby can place pressure on the sciatic nerve as it competes for space.

2: The hormone, relaxin increases and makes the joints of the pelvis relax but unfortunately it also relaxes the spine, allowing for the possibility of a slipped disc.

3: The extra weight of the growing baby can change a woman’s posture and place further stress on their back.

4: Stress. Being pregnant can be stressful at times. Suffering sciatica doesn’t help and it can become a vicious circle.

It is vitally vital that pregnant women take fantastic care of their back when lifting anything remotely heavy. The, back straight, legs bent technique will prevent many injuries and also will come in handy once the child arrives and starts to pile on the weight.

Sleeping can also be a problem for backs. It is advisable to try and sleep on your side, never on the back and to keep the legs bent a small. Use pillows between the knees and also to support the abdomen.

Exercises For Sciatica – Relieving Sciatica Nerve Pain

If the sciatic nerve happens to become squeezed or pinched it can cause pain, numbness or a tingling down the leg or even in the foot. The pain often comes from a nerve in the lower back being pinched by one of the spinal vertebrae.

Sometimes it can originate in the piriformis muscle since often the nerve runs directly through this tissue. It is best to consult with your doctor if you are experiencing pain due to a herniated disc or other back injury.

With lower back injuries causing nerve pain, strengthening and stretching the muscles often can relieve the pain but it is vital to only do so in such a way as to not cause further injury.

Here are some excellent muscle stretches to help with sciatica nerve pain. They are based on yoga postures but are simplified.

This technique is a variation of the yoga pigeon position. Lie flat on your back and place both legs straight up in the air. Then place your right ankle onto your left leg, just above your knee so that it forms a figure of 4 shape.

Place your right hand through the space between your legs and hold your other hand that stretches round your left leg to meet it. Once you can comfortably hold your hands together start to bend your left leg so that you can feel the outside of your right hip start to stretch.

Don’t over do it and as soon as you feel the stretch hold it for about half a minute.

A second stretching exercise that can help with sciatica nerve pain is as follows.

Lying down on your back bring your left knee up and place your left foot flat on the floor. Bring your right let up as far as you comfortably can but try and keep your pelvis flat.

Hold your thigh and flex your foot to stretch the hamstring and calf. Once you feel some tension try to hold it for about 10 seconds, relax and repeat a few times.

Slowly let the leg down and then repeat using the other leg.

Be sure to take it simple with these and any other exercises for sciatica, especially if you haven’t been getting too much exercise in recent years. Gently is the key to avoid further injury. Your body may be stiff but will start to loosen and strengthen as you practice these on a daily basis.

Symptoms Of Sciatica – Problems With A Pinched Sciatic Nerve

]]>

Sciatica is a medical problem starts of in your hip and can cause severe pain all the way down your leg to the foot. Very often it causes pain to the knees and lower parts of the leg.

Sufferers can experience irritating feelings of numbness, dull ache or even intensely disturbing shooting pains. The body’s nervous system is extremely complex and the sciatic nerves are the longest and thickest nerves in the whole body.

They run down each leg from the lower back, ending at the toes. This complex nerve joins the spinal column at the lower back and unfortunately it is quite simple to become pinched or compressed, especially as we grow older. This can lead to severe pain known as sciatica.

If you are suffering from pain, anywhere from the lower back to the feet then it could be due to the sciatic nerve becoming pinched. There are many reasons why the sciatic nerve may start to play up and cause pain and unfortunately it can often be place down to ancient age.

As we grow older our spine is one part of our bodies that can start to have problems. The nerves that pass through it can sometimes become pinched or pressed causing sciatica.

Injury of course can aggravate the problems greatly. Herniated discs are a major cause of sciatic nerve pain. Lack of exercise, sitting or standing for long periods together with lifting things incorrectly can trigger a bout of pain that can take a long time to clear up.

Once it happens it can return easily once the nerve is pinched again. Herniated discs cause a bulge between the spinal vertebrae and this bulge can press on the sciatic nerve causing intense pain.

Sciatica the Truth!

Here are two (2) Small-Known Sciatica Facts That Could Help You Place An End To Your Sciatica Pain With Surprising Ease—And Save You A Virtual Mountain Of Frustration, Wasted Time And Squandered Treatment Fees:

1—“Sciatica” pain is often COMPLETELY UNRELATED to the Sciatic Nerve, because…

2—Several hidden muscular problems frequently cause IDENTICAL symptoms.

Vast numbers of Sciatica sufferers are not finding lasting relief from drugs, physical therapy or other conventional treatments—but just because they’re trapped in this quandary doesn’t mean you have to be—It could simply be that.

Your Sciatica Pain May Not Be Coming From Your Sciatic Nerve—Even In Spite Of What X-rays Or MRIs SEEM To Show.

As outrageous as that may sound at first, it would be very excellent news to you, wouldn’t it?

Well, the truth is, despite medical theory and well loved belief, Sciatica pain is not necessarily caused by abnormalities of the lower spine (like herniated or bulging disks) that affect the origins of the Sciatic Nerve.

Or even Sciatic Nerve inflammation!

WAIT! You may be thinking—That really contradicts everything I’ve ever heard about Sciatica—Including what my doctor says!

Even the diagnosis itself, “Sciatica” suggests the pain must have something to do with the Sciatic NERVE—Doesn’t it?

Countless people are walking around pain-free, in spite of bulging or degenerated disks, spinal stenosis, and a host of other spinal conditions.

These abnormalities do not necessarily cause pain.

Place another way, if these problems did always cause Sciatica (or low-back pain) everyone over the age of 50 would be in constant pain, since virtually everyone has some form of spinal degeneration by then.

You’re undoubtedly familiar already with Sciatica’s annoying symptoms?

Pain or irritation through the buttock and/or down the back of the leg, (possibly with weakness, tingling or pins and needles etc.)…BUT

Here’s What Your Doctor Probably Hasn’t Told You:

Several muscles in the hip and buttock area frequently cause or “mimic” exactly the same symptoms! (And NOT by pressing on the Sciatic Nerve.)

So How Do You Find Out If A Hidden Muscular Problem Is The Cause Of Your Sciatica Pain? And What Should You Do If It Is?

Make an appointment with a Back Pain Specialist and get yourself properly assessed as soon as possible.

Exercises For Sciatica – Sciatica Pain Relief Through Exercise

Some exercises may not be suitable for all sufferers of sciatica so it is best to follow the advice from your doctor. Gentle exercise seldom does any harm. Often it can help with sciatica, not always but it certainly is worth a try.

There are lots of different types of exercise that can help with the pain of sciatica. Sciatica pain can be different from person to person and often different exercises help different sufferers. The rule is just try and see what works for you.

Here are a few exercises that have proven successful with many people.

Forward bending exercises.

This can help your lower back which often is a source of sciatica pain. Remember that these exercises are not to be treated like body building but more gentle movement of the muscles. You shouldn’t be tired and sweating after doing them.

Sit on the ground with your legs about one foot apart and lean forward, stretching your hands out in front of you. Go as far forward as is comfortable and don’t push it.

Don’t worry if you can’t touch your feet or even get near there. Over time your body will become more flexible. Once you get to the point of discomfort just hold it a moment and then relax out of it.

Much the same exercise can be done while standing. Keep your feet about one foot apart and bend forward keeping your back straight. The aim is to try and place the top of your head on the ground but of course you can’t do that. It is just a gentle forward bend until you feel you have gone far enough. The forward bend often helps relieve the sciatic nerve pain.

Stomach exercises.

Exercising the stomach muscles doesn’t seem that relevant to sciatic pain but often it does help. Stomach crunches aren’t something you should rush in to. Often people have not exercised these muscles in years so do take it simple to start with.

Expect some muscle pain after starting with the exercises, often on the second day. This is normal but to ensure it isn’t too painful don’t over do it to start with.

Exercises for sciatica should always be done gently in order to not aggravate the situation. Don’t forget that you should continue to exercise after the current pain has subsided and not wait until the next bout of discomfort.
