Chronic pain, such as that experienced by people with fibromyalgia is often only remedied by medication. Depending on the severity of the condition and the number of symptoms different doses and combinations of drugs may be used. Since fibromyalgia tends to be a chronic condition, many patients will need to take fibromyalgia pain medications for long periods of time. This makes it especially vital for them to consult with their doctors about their medications and expected side effects.

Side effects of medications used for fibromyalgia
Every drug has side effects that can vary depending on the people using them. It all depends on the person’s specific body makeup, overall health and even allergies, if they have them.

For fibromyalgia medication to become an effective treatment to the disorder, these side effects must be known and understood. Here are the commonly used fibromyalgia medications and their known side effects:

Non-opioids
Fibromyalgia medications that are considered non-opioids include acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin. These are all used to treat pain and may be obtained over-the-counter or with a prescription. While they are effective against pain, some non-opioids can cause gastrointestinal problems that can lead to stomach upset and even bleeding. They can also trigger asthma and cause nausea and vomiting.

Acetaminophens have milder side effects but if they are taken in high doses, they can affect the liver. You should avoid alcohol and stick to the recommended dosages.

Anti-depressants
Anti-depressants are often prescribed in conjunction with other fibromyalgia medications for their calming effect. They are also effective in inducing sleep and helping patients to feel relaxed. As a result, sufferers sleep better and feel less fatigued during the day. Some of the risks of using anti-depressants include constipation, dizziness, lightheadedness and mouth dryness.

Sleep modifiers
Sleep modifiers are often prescribed along with fibromyalgia medications if insomnia is a problem. While they are effective for inducing sleep and minimizing fatigue, sleep modifiers are only prescribed as small-term treatment because they can be habit forming.

They can also cause withdrawal effects on people who have been using them for some time and suddenly stop. They are not recommended for intake during times when the patient has to be outdoors driving, riding a public transportation or working in an area where sleepiness might result to an accident.

Anti-spastic
Anti-spastic drugs are sometimes used with other fibromyalgia medications to ease uncomfortable muscle spasms and control burning or tingling sensations that result from a nerve injury. If taken in high dosage for a long period of time, they can cause liver problems and lower white and red blood cells.

Steroids
Steroids help reduce pain caused by swelling or inflammation. On the downside, they can cause fluid build-up, stomach irritation, muscle weakness and bleeding. In some patients, steroids may also cause confusion.

Opioids
If patients do not respond to lower-dose fibromyalgia medication to treat pain, doctors may sometimes prescribe opioids, which are effective against moderate to severe pain. Opioids like morphine, codeine, methadone, hydromorphone and hydrocodone are very effective in reducing pain but patients may not find their side effects pleasant. Some of these include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, itching and urination problems. Because they can be addictive, they are also not prescribed for regular use.

I have a friend that suffers so much from this condition but the doctors in this area has treated her so terribly due to their lack of knowledge and poor bedside manner. She had Juevinlle Artheritis in the fourth grade. She was hospitalized several times for rhemoid atherits in high school. Even then she had the irritable bowel sydrome and chronic fatigue. Then another specialist said she also had osteoporosis and she has gone to various clincs for pain management since she is now allegeric to ibprhen, asperin, and other antinflamatory medication since she has been taking them since the age of 9. Now she is so depressed and have very few friends due to her feeling like she don\\’t know when the pain will get so severe that she can\\’t walk. She has been to therapy and tries to practice alternative medications like taking garlic pills and avoiding read meats. I want so much to help her but she is so depressed because for about 3 years the diease went dorment and she was able to feel like a human being. After being caught in a flood and staying in a wet enviroment for several days, the diease came back. Do you have any advice to help her get relieve from pain. She also goes to counseling to help with her depression and her inablity to work and do fun activities.

How Can Mesothelioma Pain Be Treated Medically Without The Use Of Medication?

Some people have mesothelioma cancer pain that is not relieved by drugs or non-medical methods. When this happens, some other medical non drug related methods can be used to relieve the cancer pain. These other methods include: - Procedures to help stop pain impulses from going through the nerves Surgery Nerve pathways that carry pain impulses to the brain can be blocked, leading to reduced pain perception. To block these pathways, a neurosurgeon may cut nerves, usually near the spinal cord. When the nerves that relay pain are ruined, feelings of pain, pressure, and temperature can no longer be felt. Only surgeons with special skills, who are also expert in pain management should do this kind of surgery. These surgeons normally work with other pain specialists to explore other methods of pain control before they cut nerves. Nerve block A nerve block is a procedure where a local anesthetic (a numbing drug), which may be combined with a steroid, is injected into or around a nerve or into the space around the spinal cord to block pain. After the injection, the nerve is no longer able to relay pain so the pain is relieved for some time. For longer lasting pain relief, phenol or alcohol can be injected. A nerve block may cause muscle paralysis or a loss of all feeling in the affected area. Spinal analgesia Low doses of pain medicine may be injected into the fluid around the spine (called intrathecal injection). If this works, a tube and a pump may be used to deliver the pain medicine directly into the spinal fluid to control the pain. Morphine is often used for this purpose, and you can still have side effects like itching and constipation. Surgery is done to place the small pump into your body. Epidural Certain kinds of pain may respond to pain medicine that is injected into the space around the layers of the spine. If this works, a pump can be implanted so that you can get pain medicines directly around the nerves. Numbness or weakness of the treated area can result. Other cancer treatments might be given to shrink the tumor: Sometimes, when mesothelioma cancer pain is caused by the size of the tumor pressing on nearby pain sensitive nerves, the tumor size can be reduced by shrinking the tumor to relieve the pressure effect of the tumor on the nearby nerves, thus reducing pain. These method is not aimed at achieving a cure for the cancer , it is just aimed at reducing the pain caused by the cancer. Chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or radiation may be used in this way. There are also some surgical procedures that can also be used to shrink the tumors ,these surgeries are known as debulking procedures. Radioactive injections are sometimes used when the cancer has spread to many places in the bone — the radioactive drug settles in the bones near the cancer and helps to stop its growth and relieve pain. In a few cases, other treatments like radiofrequency ablation can be used in certain areas of the body. In this treatment, electrodes are inserted near the tumor to heat and ruin the cancer.

Are You Looking For Natural Pain Relief Medication?

There is probably nothing more debilitating than chronic pain. Defined as pain lasting for six months or longer. Chronic pain afflicts millions of people. There is no way for you to be completely sure of preventing chronic pain. It can strike at any stage of your life, whether because of an accident or disease.
Chronic pain often long outlives its original cause, worsening over time and taking on a life of its own. Recent research has shown that chronic pain is destructive to your body. The longer chronic pain goes untreated, the worse it becomes. Chronic pain unleashes a cascade of harmful hormones, such as cortisol, that adversely affect your immune system and kidney function. You can’t expect it to go away by itself.
Many chronic pain sufferers wind up taking huge amounts of anti-inflammatory drugs. The NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen place them at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding and liver dysfunction. The newer class of pharmaceutical pain relievers, the COX-2 inhibitors, while an improvement in terms of side effects, still may cause some abdominal distress.
Anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin and Aleve, were implicated in the deaths of 16,000 people in the USA in 2000, due to bleeding ulcers and related complications, according to the Federal Drug Abuse Network. Research is also uncovering the fact that anxiety and depression are not so much responses to pain as the consequences of it.
Functional-imaging scans reveal similar disturbances in brain chemistry for both chronic pain and for depression. Pain and depression share the same neural pathways, the same circuitry. Allopathic physicians to treat depression and pain use the same medications. Depression and stressful events can enhance pain.
Chronic pain sufferers usually respond to stress with more pain. Serotonin and the endorphins that modulate healthy brain functioning also modulate depression. If you have chronic pain it uses up your serotonin like a car running out of gas.
It’s vital to reduce the level of prostaglandins in your body. The compounds that cause you aches, pain and inflammation that makes your life miserable. It helps you to relax your muscles and to reduce swelling. It improves blood flow to areas such as your joints.
Most likely, you or someone you know suffers from some form of joint pain. With the recent removal of VIOXX and Celebrex from the market, millions of people are searching for an all-natural alternative. Finally, you have an all-natural and safe solution that is now being sold stating that it is the ONLY pain relief health supplement that includes a complete list of active botanicals in one simple to take supplement. You might have it seen on TV.
With this you can relieve your chronic pain of osteoarthritis, rheumatism, neuralgia, stiff joints, shingles, neck ache, and lower back pain. It also provides welcome pain relief from carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, fibromyalgia, muscle and joint pain, pinched nerves and sprains.
It is stated that it’s the most powerful anti-inflammatory agent on the market today and best of all it’s 100% natural and safe. Additionally, it acts as a highly effective lubricant in your joints, muscles and other tissues. It is also an immune system modulator, which can be effectual against autoimmune conditions. All of these characteristics contribute to its ability to act as an analgesic by removing the source of pain (inflamed and irritated tissues) so that there is no pain impulse.
Taking this product is NOT a substitute for treatment by a physician for chronic pain conditions, but the active ingredients can help to control this sort of chronic and severe pain without causing the side effects associated with many artificial pain relievers.

Pain Relief | Which Is The Best Medication For Your Childs Pain?

You would reckon that after decades of using tylenol, ibuprofen, and codeine, we would have a grasp on which one of these is best to reduce pain due to musculoskeletal injuries, things like bruises, and even breaks when it comes to children. Not the case at all!
There simply has not been a lot of research into this, which is why this study published in the Pediatric Journal sheds a lot of light on the children’s pain issue.
But which one is best? Tylenol? Ibuprofen? What about codeine? As a parent, confusing to say the least.
Dr. Ting An Lee, a pediatrician at the Childrens Hospital at Montefiore, says, “You face a choice on which one do I choose. There have not been a lot of studies to necessarily compare, so this is the study is unique in that way. “
The research outlined in the Pediatrics Journal, compares acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin) and also Codeine as to their indivdual effectiveness on reducing children’s pain.
Codeine, which is a narcotic, is associated with more side effects than ibuprofen, so it appears there is small reason to use it without a doctor’s specific prescription and supervision.
The study looked at how well each of these medications worked for musculoskeletal injuries to the neck, back, arms or legs in kids who came to the emergency room.
The findings clearly shows a pain relief advantage to ibuprofen, which acts both centrally in the brain pain centers and at the site of injury. We are talking about one dose, ONE DOSE proved to be very effective in reducing children’s pain!
We should make a strong point that if your child takes a pain medicatin and do not get pain relief, certainly within 24 hours, or worsening symptoms, like more swelling or more pain, you should take your child to your doctor.
When it comes to children’s pain, it looks like a ibuprofen is the medicine of choice. But just to be safe, there are non-oral solutions that relieve pain as well.
Corpron for one was developed by an orthopedic surgeon interested in providing his patients with an simple to use pain relieving product available over-the-counter to help alleviate inflammation, pain, and stiffness.
During pre-clinical assessments of Corprofen, many patients who used Corprofen as a topical cream for pain relief required lower doses of oral medications.
Another topical product is Menastil. Menastil is the result of 4 years of testing and product development with its origins in nerve cell research. Taking note of historical uses for essential oils, it was shown that Calendula oil, Menastil’s active ingredient, was highly effective as a topical analgesic for pain relief.
As a parent you now know the best remedies and products on the market to reduce pain due to things like bruises, and even breaks when it comes to your child.
