Alternative Medicine and It’s Use in Natural Pain Management

]]>

Chronic Pain conditions are a growing problem in the United States. And while the debate still rages about whether or not chronic pain should be managed as a separate condition or just a symptom of another problem it is clear that pain management has become a booming segment of the healthcare industry.

Consequently, the use of pharmaceutical drugs for pain control has also reached an all time high. Drugs like Oxicontin, Vicodin and methadone, are front page news in causing America’s latest drug crisis, as a result, the use of cocaine and heroin have also reached levels not seen in this country in 30 years.

Due to the economic and scientific phenomena of the pharmaceutical revolution of the 20th century, thousands of years of knowledge were suddenly abandoned. Herbal medicine has safely and effectively treated pain for millennia, and is for safer than the synthesized, processed medications that today’s doctors seem to be all too willing to hand out like so much candy.

In the realm of alternative medicine, there are many forms of natural pain management that are in fact, the basis of where many of our oh-so-well loved pharmaceutical drugs come from.

Codeine and morphine are opium derivatives that may be effective but are also highly addictive, and even aspirin is a derivative of willow bark. Many other plants have been used in natural pain management since antiquity, such as lavender and chamomile for minor pain issues and these plants have the added benefit of also assisting with the emotional component of pain such as anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Plants like henbane and mandrake are so effective that they are even used very effectively during labor to ease the pain of childbirth.

Some wonderful and powerful herbal medicine can also be found in the spice cabinet. Spices like turmeric, and ginger are two of the most powerful anti- inflammatories on the planet. These plants are natural COX-2 inhibitors; they are the alternative medicine answer to the well loved pharmaceutical drugs Celebrex and Vioxx. In the middle east, India and all over Asia where the diets are rich in spices like turmeric, and ginger and cayenne, where life is also far less convenient then our own, people have a far less occurrence of arthritis and chronic back pain, and continue to work very labor intensive jobs such as farming and agriculture work even into their 90’s.

There has always been an accepted school of thought in allopathic medicine that it is acceptable to injure one part of the body to heal another, thus even common over the counter NSAID pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, can cause long term hurt, acetaminophen to the liver and ibuprofen to the kidneys, in natural pain management many plants, roots, barks, and other herbs not only antistetic in nature but they are also anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic as well, and herbal medicine is gentler on the system and is more synergistic with the body allowing for greater absorption of the necessary constitutes.

So you see that alternative medicine goes beyond the typically accepted ideal of treating just the symptoms and goes farther to treat many of the underlying causes as well as some of the other components involved in chronic pain conditions.

6 Effective Alternative Pain Management Therapies

Edit Article |

]]>

Prescription pain killers can take over your life, and it can happen to nearly anyone, especially those suffering from back pain.

Sound crazy? Reckon it is unfathomable that our fantastic medical system could aid in the addiction of an otherwise upstanding man? See Rush Limbaugh.

The truth is hundreds of thousands of individuals are hooked on narcotic pain medications every year. And who can blame them? Pain hurts and so do withdrawal symptoms.

A different trend of thought for dealing with pain has surfaced within the last few decades. Appropriately called “alternative pain management,” this trend has grown into an industry providing many products and services that thousands of chronic pain sufferers rely upon on a daily basis.

A new study by David Eisenberg, M.D found that total visits to alternative medicine practitioners jumped 47% from 427 million in 1990, to 629 million in 1997 which easily topped the 386 million visits to primary-care doctors.

Here is your quick rundown on the top trends in alternative pain management.

TENS

Tens stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Transcutaneous (trans-kyoo-tey-nee-uh s) means “through, or by way of the skin.To override the pain, TENS units send a more pleasant and dominant electrical signals into the body and along the nerve pathways. TENS recently was recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Task Force on Chronic Pain Management as an effective mode of pain relief. (Read full article here.)

Chiropractics

Despite its growing acceptance even within “mainstream” medicine, Chiropractics still has its doubters. Yet it has far more advocates. Golfers and other pro sports individuals will often use a private Chiropractor. The practice has been growing in popularity here in the U.S. since the early 80′s.

Decompression

Usually administered by a specialized Chiropractor, decompression is very effective for disc-related back pain sufferers. The patient is harnessed on a table and a computer uses micro movements to slightly expand the amount of space between the vertebrae.

Visceral Manipulation

This is practice of “massaging” internal organs and the membrane that supports them. When an organ is hurt the membrane that holds it in place can stiffen forcing the surrounding organs to go around it. Visceral manipulation has helped thousands with ailments ranging from lower back pain to heart and lung problems.

Acupuncture

Got pain? Fix it by sticking dozens of needles in you. Sounds fun doesn’t it? Acupuncture dates way back to ancient China. It works by altering the senses of the nerves surrounding the area in pain. Reviews have been mixed as with most alternative approaches. Some swear by it, others get nothing out of it.

Yoga

Combining the art of meditation and stretching, yoga is the ultimate heal-yourself approach to dealing with pain. There is no shortage of believers either. But like most alternative approaches, science can’t find any solid evidence to back up the claims of the thousands who swear by it.

There are many other alternative approaches to managing pain in addition to these front runners. If you are in pain it may be in your best interest to try some of these remedies first before accepting a potential addictive regimen of pain killers. Who knows, you may even be able to avoid a surgery and improve your overall health. And excellent health is the number one preventative medicine to keep you out of pain in the first place!

Alternative therapy has indisputably trapped the attention of both healthcare practitioners and consumers. While there are many ways to treat pain, but over the years alternative therapy has shown that it can provide proper and effective pain management techniques. Some of these holistic techniques include Physical Therapy, Integrative Manual Therapy, Myofascial Release, Craniosacral Therapy and Trager. These techniques have been successful in providing comfort and in speeding up the healing processes of hurt joints, tissues and muscles.

If you have muscle pain or stress, then you should consider Alternative therapy for pain management. This holistic approach will make your muscle movements comfortable and provide optimal relief for the entire body. Alternative therapy encircles various disciplines; some of them are discussed below:

Integrative Manual Therapy – Hands-on Pain Management Technique

Integrative Manual Therapy is a manipulative alternative therapy that tackles pain via hand-on techniques and physical involvement. These include massages, soft tissue mobilization, gentle joint mobilizations, mind/body therapy, neural tissue techniques, muscle energy techniques and much more.

Body/Mind Integration – Interaction with the Brain

Mind body focuses on the interactions among the brain and the remaining body parts, the mind and general behavior. This technique directly affects health by using a number of emotional, social, mental, spiritual and behavioral factors.

Gentle Joint Mobilizations – Releasing Joint Tension

Massage therapist commonly used this safe technique for pain management and releasing tension from areas such as neck, head, spine, wrists, ankles, feet, ribs and pelvis. Various factors like aging, poor posture and stress play a major role in the immobilization of joints.  This can make pain and tension in muscle and nearby areas. Small, passive and gentle movements applied on individual joints make the joints movable and flexible.

Muscle Energy Techniques – Relief by Muscle Relation

Another aspect of alternative therapy is Muscle Energy Technique. This technique is used to promote muscle relaxation and provide relief to temporary muscle fatigue and helpful to gain motion.

Myofascial Release – Relief through Blood Circulation

Myofascial release is a type of soft tissue therapy that is used for pain management and somatic dysfunction. In this technique, the relaxation of contracted muscles occurs through increased circulation. It also provides venous and lymphatic drainage by stimulating the stretch reflex of muscles.

Craniosacral Therapy – Well loved among Practitioners

This alternative medicine therapy is also called cransiosacral bodywork and is extensively used by the massage therapists, chiropractors and professional therapists. This technique targets mental stress, neck and back pain and migraine headaches. TMJ syndrome and fibromyalgia can easily be treated through this form of therapy.

Managing pain is a challenge but alternative therapy makes this hard task much simpler and quicker. Furthermore, medicines today simply cannot provide sufficient pain management. Many people are now realizing these facts and are keenly opting for this holistic approach to seek complete pain management solutions.

Back pain, most prevalently lower back pain is one of the common medical complaints, affecting nearly eighty percent of the total population.
