Top 5 Low Back Pain Causes

If you want to prevent low back pain or if you already suffer from it, you need to know what causes it. Here are the five most common low back pain causes:

1. Muscle Imbalances

Many people are not familiar with muscle imbalances. In simple terms, a muscle imbalance occurs when you have overdeveloped and tight muscles in one area of your body while the opposing muscles are weak and stretched out of their normal position. Muscle imbalances can happen anywhere on your body and there are several things that can contribute to and make them, such as how you sit, stand and walk, what you do for work, how active you are, what activities you frequently do, and what types of exercise you perform.

Muscle imbalances pull your bones and joints out of their normal alignment, and this results in what are called postural dysfunctions. Postural dysfunctions cause constant tension and increased wear and tear on your bones, ligaments, joints and discs. Postural dysfunctions include abnormal alignment of the pelvis and abnormal curvature of the spine, and this often leads to low back pain.

Muscle imbalances often cause you to feel pain in one part of your body, such as your lower back, when the pain is really originating in another part of your body, such as your hamstrings or thighs.

The excellent news is that muscle imbalances are relatively simple to identify and address. Once you know what muscle imbalances you have, you can then right them by performing the right combination of corrective exercises and stretches.

2. Overuse, Strain or Injury

Low back pain is often caused by overuse, strain or injury. For instance, people often hurt their backs performing common activities such as pushing, pulling and lifting things, bending over a workbench, cleaning out the garage, or working in the garden or yard. Sports, accidents and falls are also frequent causes of low back pain.

3. Medical Conditions

Many medical conditions can cause or contribute to lower back pain. These include spinal deformities, such as scoliosis (which causes curvature of the spine), kyphosis (Scheuermann’s disease) and spondylolisthesis, various forms of arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal column that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves). Other causes of low back pain include pregnancy, kidney stones, infections, tumors and fibromyalgia (which causes fatigue and widespread muscle pain).

4. Age

As you age, the discs between the vertebrae of your spine, which act as shock absorbers and allow your back to go, deteriorate and provide less cushioning, and this often leads to lower back pain. Your bones and muscles also tend to lose strength as you age, which increases the risk for the types of injuries that can cause lower back pain.

5. Emotional Stress

Although the causes of low back pain are usually physical, emotional stress can play a role in how severe low back pain is and how long it lasts. Stress can affect your body in many ways, including causing your back muscles to become tense and more painful.

Low Back Problems Relief ? And A Painful Story

If you’ve ever had back pain you will be able to relate to this article.  Those with back pain personally know just how crippling back pain can be. The one thing that you want more than anything is low back problems relief of the pain.

My friend Jim found this out.

Jim was like any other person in their 30′s.  He was full of energy, and nothing was going to stop him.  Until…..

Jim was not doing anything strenuous just cleaning out his car.  He was vacuuming the floor of the back seat when IT happened.

Jim felt a pain in his low back like nothing he ever felt before.  He couldn’t even get up from the trunk.  Fortunately his friend was with helping him clean the car. 

Jim screamed for help.  Yes this really what he did.  With a huge amount of effort Jim was helped out of the trunk.  He couldn’t believe how much he hurt.

Finally with extra help Jim was able to get into the house and to bed.  Jim did all the things that people with back pain do.  He rested in bed, he used ice and heat.  He took some over the counter pain reliever.

Jims friend visited on the third day after this had happened.  He urged Jim to get out of bed and start to get around.  Jim questioned him, “Are you crazy?  Do you know how much this hurts?”

Yes his friend did know as he had problems like this before himself.  Well Jim was not going to get up and did not get up.  Unfortunately he found out later that he lengthened his time to recover by several days. 

He learned the hard way that you must start to go after a couple of days in bed.  Once Jim figured out that what he was doing was not working he finally chose to listen to his friend.

He slowly started moving around and as time went by he found that the pain did subside. 

After this Jim wanted to know how this happened to him in the first place.  He was in his early thirties for goodness sake.  Just how could this happen?

Fortunately for Jim and now you by hearing his tale, will find out some of the answers to Jims questions.

Jims friend told him that there are many things that can cause back pain like this.  What we do or don’t do is a factor.  Our weight and what we wear and how we walk are some of the reasons back pain like this happen.

The first mistake, he told Jim was that he needed to get moving on the third day.  Jim didn’t and it made his recovery time longer that it had to be.  His friend continued, what kind of shoes do you wear Jim? 

Flip flops Jim answered.  Do you realize that they have no support Jim?  Just like women that wear high heels, there is no support.  When either of these are worn your back has to work extra to keep your balance.

Your posture too is very vital.  I have noticed 2 things about you in the past.  When you walk you are not walking straight.  You are bent forward and looking at your feet more than you are looking up.  Also, when you sit you never sit straight.  You are always slouched in the chair.  So here’s what you need to change.  When you walk, keep your back straight and your head up.  When you sit keep your back straight and don’t lean on the back of the chair.

Next Jim’s friend questioned, “How firm is your mattress?”  Jim said “Oh it’s so soft and comfortable.”  Jim’s friend told him that he needed to get a firmer mattress.  He said to Jim that you are in bed for 8 hours or so.  Your back needs a firm mattress to support the muscles.

Jims friend mentioned a couple more things that Jim needed to do.  First, start stretching every day and also to start exercising every day.  These things with help to loosen your muscles and start to strengthen your core muscles.  Once you do this you will find that your back will feel much better and more quickly than you thought possible.

Pain Can Be Tough

During a brain freeze, one may feel it in the head, when the cause may be down the throat. Pain referral is also common in myofascial pain syndromes, which are caused by trigger points in muscle, fascia (fibrous tissue that connects, separates, and supports muscles, bones, skin, and other organs), tendon, and ligament tissue. A trigger point can be thought of as a muscle protection mechanism, which stiffens the muscle in order to limit range of motion, triggered by injury, overuse, and adrenaline – all phenomena in which modern humans excel. Resultant stiffening or spasms of muscles cause blood stagnation, nutrient loss, and buildup of toxins. Such protection can become chronic and painful and can activate other trigger points, spreading pain and disability like an infection. Postural muscles, as in the neck, shoulders, back, and pelvic girdle, and others, such as forearms, hands, calves, and face, that are used in repetitive actions are most vulnerable to trigger points. Trigger points may cause headaches (tension and migraine), temporomandibular joint pain, sciatica, and apparent carpal tunnel syndrome and can be associated with burning, numbness, weakness, temperature, sweating, dryness, dizziness, nausea, tinnitus, vision, decreased range of motion, and other problems. Since trigger point syndromes are unfamiliar to many physicians, these familiar symptoms can make diagnosis hard. Sedentary people and those, such as computer operators, dentists, drivers, and specialized athletes, who hold unnatural positions or perform repetitive tasks are at high risk of developing active trigger points. After sitting at a desk, running or a gym workout may seem to make up for the sedentary time, but it really may promote the pain and dysfunction. Rigid use then overuse is not the best.
