Herniated Disc Therapy

]]>

Herniated disc therapy is a niche sector of the back pain industry and is one of the most commonly sought dorsopathy solutions. Herniated discs are incredibly common spinal abnormalities which have traditionally been blamed for sourcing chronic and recurrent acute back pain in countless millions of patients worldwide. In recent years, medical science is finally realizing that herniated discs are only occasionally linked to any symptoms and are rarely the right causation of chronic back pain.

For as long as doctors could visualize spinal discs using diagnostic imaging studies, herniated discs have been the ideal back pain scapegoat condition. Since disc pathologies are incredibly common in the lumbar and cervical regions, there is a very excellent chance that any particular patient will demonstrate their existence, whether or not they might endure back pain. But, this is a recent development in medical knowledge, since in years past, herniated discs were only generally seen in patients with back pain and were therefore deemed to be the likely culprit. Now that diagnostic imaging is widespread, doctors have learned that herniated discs exist in as many patients without back pain as those who do suffer from it. Additionally, even symptoms which seem to fit the classic disc pathology profile often exist in patients who do not really have a herniated intervertebral disc.

Of the usual herniated disc therapy options, the overwhelming majority are purely symptomatic in nature. Symptomatic back pain treatment is a huge problem, simply because most patients do not know that these modalities are not designed to cure anything. Patients seek care looking for permanent relief and most never comprehend that the treatments offered are not going to cure them, no matter how long they spend in therapy or how much effort they place into their own care. This is one of my largest complaints with service providers who work in the back pain industry. I have simply seen far too many physical therapists, chiropractors and pharmaceutically obsessed physicians who treat patients causally with methods which amount to small more than taking an aspirin…

Now, if symptomatic treatment was all that was available, then his would be fine, as long as the patient was informed of the need for ongoing care and the extremely small likelihood of ever finding a cure. In my experience, this aspect of care is universally and systematically overlooked and patients wonder why they still have pain after year’s worth of care. This is nothing small of unethical and sometimes borders on criminal behavior on the part of opportunistic back pain specialists.

I routinely advise patients to learn all they can about their diagnosed conditions, as well as the treatments offered, from the very beginning of their care. Experience has taught me that the longer patients wait to take an active role in their own care, the longer they will suffer unnecessarily. I learned this bitter lesson from my own 18 year journey being tossed throughout the medical system like a rag doll. I never questioned what was told to me by my doctors until I finally had enough and went about educating myself all about back pain in a way which insured I would never be lied to again…

I can only say to all who are still suffering that the more you know about your treatment options and your diagnosed condition, the better your chances of achieving a pain-free life and not falling victim to the profit driven medical industry. Remember, the key word here is industry… Medicine is huge business and doctors are business people out to make money. Herniated disc care is one of the most profitable in the back pain sector and in general, back pain is one of the most profitable niches in the medical field. Patients should be warned that their health may not be top priority when it comes to the types of care recommended…

Oxycodone Side Effects

A person suffering from moderate to severe pain may receive a prescription from the doctor for the combination of the generically named medicines acetaminophen and oxycodone. Perloxx can make the person produce abnormal stools while using the medicine. It may turn the stools to the consistency and color of tar. It also can cause the person’s stools to appear lighter than normal in color. Either of these side effects needs immediate medical intervention, Mayo Clinic indicates. Like most narcotic pain relievers, the oxycodone in Perloxx can cause the person to find it hard to focus her vision, Drugs.com Indicates. She may have distress with near or far object recognition, or it may occur as a general blurriness.

Going by such brand names as Percocet, OxyContin, Tylox and Percodan, oxycodone is an opiate that is highly addictive and is being abused by many. When taken repeatedly, one can become tolerant to the drug, therefore requiring higher doses to experience the same effects. Oxycodone is often mistakenly referred to as oxycotton. While OxyContin is a brand name of the drug, oxycotton is just a misspelling of the name. This drug is also referred to as oxy and hillbilly heroin on the street. There are many different types of drug tests available that detect oxycodone. When searching for one, look for those that test for opiate abuse. Also look for drug tests that test for another opiate, hydrocodone.

Oxycodone is an narcotic analgesic used to control pain and an anti-cough medication. A common brand name is Oxycontin. Oxycodone addiction and use has been increasingly dramatically in the past ten years. In fact, the average use of oxycodone in the United States has increased by 300% of the past decade. Likewise, the number of emergency room visits related to oxycodone addiction and use has increased by 500%. A feeling of relaxation and satisfaction that can last for many hours then follows the initial high made by oxyocodone in the person with a oxyocodone addiction. Along with the feeling of relaxation, the respiratory system is affected causing a decrease in the rate of breathing. This slow down in the person with the addiction can be fatal.

I started using the Fentanyl Patch about 2 years ago for chronic fibromyalgia pain. When I first started them I read the common side effects on the paper the Pharmacy place in the bag. When I first started using the patches I thought it was an answer to Prayer, a miracle because the patch helped my pain so much. You would have thought I was a representative for a pharmaceutical company, I told everybody about them and how much they relieved my pain. Besides pain, oxycontin can decrease anxiety, cause euphoria, mental relaxation, constipation, and suppression of cough. It can also be used to treat moderate to severe pain associated with trauma, injuries, muscle pain, dislocations, breaks, arthritis, lower back pain, and pain associated with cancer.

If you aren’t getting the relief you need (with or without the use of Cox-2 inhibitors), you may want to consult a pain specialist. Some large hospitals (such as Stanford University) have departments devoted to pain management.

Yoga May Combat Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Less pain, fatigue, anxiety reported by study participants after 8 weeks, researchers say

Yoga that includes gentle stretches and meditation may help alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia, a small study finds.

Twenty-five women diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain syndrome, were enrolled in a two-hour yoga class that met once a week for eight weeks. Another group of 28 women diagnosed with the condition were place on a waiting list and told to continue their normal routine for dealing with fibromyalgia.

After eight weeks, the yoga group reported improvements in both physical and psychological aspects of fibromyalgia, including decreased pain, fatigue, tenderness, anxiety and better sleep and mood.

“The women were somewhat apprehensive when we started, but once they got into the rhythm of it they found it to be very helpful,” said lead study author James Carson, a clinical psychologist and pain specialist at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. “They came back after the first week reporting less pain, better sleep and feeling encouraged for the first time in years. That type of change continued to build over the course of the program.”

At the end of the study, about 4.5 percent in the yoga group reported being “very much better,” 9.1 percent said they were “much better,” 77 percent were “a small better” while 4.5 percent reported no change. In comparison, no one in the control group reported that they were “very much better” or “much better,” 19.2 percent reported being “a small better,” and 38.5 percent reported “no change.”

Average pain scores dropped from a 5 to a 4 on a 10-point scale, although there was no improvement in the overall “tender point” score.

The study was limited by its small sample, absence of follow-up and over-reliance on self-reported data, the researchers noted.

The study, published online Oct. 14,(2010) is in the November print issue of the journal Pain.

No cure exists for fibromyalgia, which is characterized by multiple tender points, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and memory and concentration problems. Some 11 to 15 million Americans have the debilitating condition, about 80 to 90 percent of them women, according to background information in the article.

Yoga is probably worth trying, Solitar said. But he noted that patients in the study were in a yoga class specially tailored to their needs and said the class at a local yoga studio might be too intense.

The yoga sessions evaluated in the study included 40 minutes of gentle stretching and poses, 25 minutes of meditation, 10 minutes of breathing techniques, a 20-minute lesson on applying yoga principals to daily life and coping with fibromyalgia and 25 minutes of group discussion. Participants were also encouraged to practice at home with a DVD on most days.

Though it’s unknown how much of the positive effect shown in the study is the “placebo” effect of doing something that feels empowering vs. something special about the yoga and meditation itself, that may be beside the point if people feel better, Solitar said.

“Many patients report that not much helps them, so anything that’s positive is a very excellent thing,” Solitar said.

In the study, women practiced Yoga of Awareness, a type of yoga developed by Carson, a yoga and meditation instructor, and his wife, study co-author Kimberly Carson. Carson taught the class. (Carson reported no financial considerations that would cause a conflict of interest.)

Yoga of Awareness draws from the Kripalu school of yoga, Carson said, which emphasizes the “inner dimensions” of yoga, such as accepting pain and being willing to learn from pain and stressful circumstances, being mentally “present in the moment” and learning to distinguish between actual events and the mind’s tendency to “catastrophize” pain — that is, thinking it’s the worst pain ever when really it’s manageable, he said.

Previous research showed Yoga of Awareness improved pain, fatigue, sleep and mood in women with breast cancer, Carson said.

It’s unknown what aspects of Yoga of Awareness are the most beneficial, but Carson said he believes the exercise, meditation and the social aspects all contribute.

“It’s the combination that has a synergistic effect,” Carson said. “Our mind and body are very connected, but we are often not aware of that fact. Techniques like yoga really reinforce that connection and make us much more conscious of the fact that our thoughts and our feelings are affecting our body, and our body is affecting how we reckon and feel.”

If we have fibromyalgia and are looking for a yoga class, Carson recommended seeking out a class advertised as “gentle” and making sure the instructor knows we have physical challenges so that poses can be modified.

Since many yoga classes don’t incorporate much meditation, Carson also recommends seeking out a meditation class, which teaches breathing exercises to reduce stress and cope with pain.

A study published in August in the New England Journal of Medicine found tai chi may also help give fibromyalgia sufferers some relief. Like yoga, tai chi is a mind-body exercise that emphasizes slow, gentle movements to build strength and flexibility, as well as deep breathing and relaxation, to go qi, or vital energy, throughout the body.

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a pain that is described as among the most acute known to mankind. It is also known as tic douloureux. It is a chronic pain condition that causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like face pain that lasts anywhere from a few seconds to as long as 2 minutes per episode. The condition is characterized by pain often accompanied by a brief facial spasm or tic. Pain distribution is unilateral and follows the sensory distribution of cranial nerve V, typically radiating to the maxillary (V2) or mandibular (V3) area. If you have trigeminal neuralgia, attacks of such pain are frequent and can often seem unbearable. These painful attacks can be spontaneous, but they may also be provoked by even mild stimulation of your face, including brushing your teeth, shaving or putting on makeup. Trigeminal neuralgia is considered by many to be among the most painful of conditions and has been labeled the suicide disease, due to the significant numbers of people taking their own lives because they were unable to have their pain controlled with medications or surgery.

Trigeminal neuralgia affects the trigeminal nerve, one of the largest nerves in the head. There is some evidence that the disorder runs in families, perhaps because of an inherited pattern of blood vessel formation. It usually occurs after the age of 70 and is unusual in anyone under the age of 50. Although sometimes debilitating, the disorder is not life-threatening. It is a disorder of the trigeminal nerve, which is the fifth and largest cranial nerve. The pain of trigeminal neuralgia may occur in a honestly small area of your face, or it may spread rapidly over a wider area. A less common form of the disorder called “Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia” may cause less intense, constant, dull burning or aching pain, sometimes with occasional electric shock-like stabs. It affects women three times more frequently than men. This condition may also occur in younger people with multiple sclerosis. Two to four percent of patients with TN, usually younger, have evidence of multiple sclerosis, which may hurt either the trigeminal nerve or other related parts of the brain.

Causes of Trigeminal neuralgia

The common causes of Trigeminal neuralgia include the following:

The cause of the pain usually is due to contact between a normal artery or vein and the trigeminal nerve at the base of your brain.

Drinking.

The cause of the pain usually is due to contact between a normal artery or vein and the trigeminal nerve at the base of your brain.

Physical nerve hurt or stress may be the initial trigger for trigeminal neuralgia.

Sometimes, the cause of trigeminal neuralgia is a blood vessel or small tumor pressing on the nerve.

Disorders such as multiple sclerosis (an inflammatory disease affecting the brain and spinal cord), certain forms of arthritis, and diabetes (high blood sugar) may also cause trigeminal neuralgia, but a cause is not always identified.

Symptoms of Trigeminal neuralgia

Some symptoms related to Trigeminal neuralgia are as follows:

Pain is brief and paroxysmal.

Increased sensitivity of the skin or numbness of the affected skin area (feeling similar to a local anesthetic, such as a Novocaine shot).

Difficulty sleeping.

An attack of trigeminal neuralgia can last from a few seconds to about a minute.

Loss of appetite.

Stabbing facial pain.

Jaw pain.

Impaired function of affected body part due to pain, or muscle weakness due to motor nerve hurt.

Treatment of Trigeminal neuralgia

Here is list of the methods for treating Trigeminal neuralgia:

Medicines such as anticonvulsants and tricyclic antidepressants.

Mild over-the-counter analgesics such as aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen may be helpful for mild pain. Narcotic analgesics such as codeine may be needed for a small time to control severe pain.

Doctors may sometimes prescribe other medications, such as lamotrignine (Lamictal) or gabapentin (Neurontin).

Pain may be treated long-term with an opioid such as methadone in some patients, but due to the nature of the neuralgia, traditional analgesics typically have negligible effect.

Pain specialists use invasive therapy, including nerve blocks as well as nerve destruction, and nerve decompression techniques, to treat trigeminal neuralgia

If medication fails to relieve pain or produces intolerable side effects such as excess fatigue, surgical treatment may be recommended.

How To Exercise Your Way Out Of Chronic Pain

A lot of people reckon that dealing with chronic pain requires a lot of expensive medication and frequent visits to pain specialists. It doesn’t have to be that way, because something as simple as exercising may help alleviate your chronic pain complaints.

Generally speaking, chronic pain is pain that lasts for three months or longer. The most commonly reported cases of chronic pain are that of the back and the neck muscles. The neck is vital in keeping the head in place and holding it up. Our back, on the other hand, is the so-called “workhorse” of our body. It carries the burden of the entire body and is responsible for nearly every go we make. And because of the vital functions these muscle groups carry, they are more prone to straining.

What are possible causes of Neck and Back pain?
Studies have shown that some chronic neck and back pain may be caused by these common reasons:

Muscle strain. Overuse of the neck muscles and improper posture may cause muscle fatigue, and eventually, neck and/or back strain.
Arthritis. The neck joint is no different from any other joint in the body, it also deteriorates with age and buys arthritis.
Disk disorders. Any disorder related to the disk in between the vertebraes may cause neck pain.
Injury. Injuries that may cause over-stretching of the soft tissues of the neck and back may cause chronic pain.

Exercise
The cheapest and simplest way to relieve your self of chronic muscle pain is to exercise. Exercise has been noted to help with a lot of condition, from treating depression to improving memory retention. Exercise takes out the possible risks from being inactive for a long while. It also increases the benefits of being active.

The body’s muscles, including the heart, lose its strength and start working less effectively when the body has been inactive for quite a long while. You place yourself at high risk of getting high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or diabetes. Lack of physical activity also increases fatigue, stress and anxiety. Lack of exercise makes the body lose its conditioning, therefore contribute more to chronic pain.

It is understandable that it is hard to get started with an exercise program, especially if you are currently experiencing chronic pain. But a small sacrifice is necessary to ensure pain relief. Here are some of the benefits you may get from exercising:
It signals your body to produce and release endorphins. Endorphins block pain impulses from reaching pain receptors in the brain. They also generate a feeling of well-being, alleviating anxiety and depression.
It helps build strength. The more exercise you do, the stronger your muscles will be. And the stronger your muscles become, the more force and load it takes off your bones and cartilages – less stress, less pain.
It helps increase flexibility. When joints are able to go their full range of motion, they are less likely to feel aches and pains.
It helps improve sleep quality. Exercise triggers the release of endorphins that give a sense of well-being, and it lowers the release of stress hormones, resulting in a better, more restful sleep.

A lot of people are worried to address their chronic neck and back pain concerns in dread of spending a lot on medicines and consultation fees. Because of this dread they tend to overlook the simplest and simplest way to alleviate themselves of this burden – exercising. A simple walk around the block or a 15 minute bicycle ride may seem to show no immediate effect, but you’ll be glad you did it in the long run.
