Back pain can be tackled in many ways. You can not depend upon the merit of any one type of treatment, to get rid of back pain. When you have back pain and when it does not subside for days together, you are so confused you are willing to follow any type of therapy that offers you hope of relief.
Well, it is the machine again that has come to the rescue of the humanity. For taking care of the lower back pain TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is used with much benefit. Powered by the batteries that send mild electric pulse through the nerves, to block the pain signals is transmitted to the brain. The pressure felt in the affected area where the pain was located is relaxed. But the cost of such treatments is on the high side, which bars many from availing the treatment.
It is not that the TENS machine is the panacea for your back pain and once you have availed the services of this machine, you are free from your back pain for ever. Proper lifestyle and taking care of small things, which you consider as insignificant, is the indirect part of your treatment.
Be disciplined when you sit, stand or lift things. Don’t do things casually, without paying proper attention. If you sit on a properly non-aligned chair that could itself be the cause of your back pain. While picking up anything from the ground, bend from the knees in a relaxed manner, and not the stiff bend by just using the back. Do not place stress on the lower muscles of your back.
If the popularity of the machine is any indication, the TENS machine has done well. To many it has given total relief, to some partial. And as it is a case with all other therapies to treat back pain, to some there is no relief at all. Nevertheless, this TENS treatment has caught the imagination of the sufferers.
Even if one man is treated, it is one less patient of back pain! Further research is being carried out to judge the effectiveness of the machine, as part of the modern day medicine. At the existing level, the relief in pain provided by the machine varies from person to person.
The TENS machine works in two ways. The machine will trigger the pain gate to close when it is set on a high pulse rate of 90-130 Hz which it is believed, will block the pain nerve path to the brain. This can be said to be its normal functioning. When the machine is set on a low pulse rate, 2-5 Hz, it will cause the body to make its own pain easing chemicals called endorphins.
The main advantage of using the TENS machine is that, that there are no side effects. But this treatment is strictly to be taken under the guidance and supervision of the physician only.

Not for giving birth but for a herniated disc and fused spine. It does work well and gives pain relief to a certain degree.

I have a TENS machine that I got for a chronic back problem. The efficacy probably varies between persons but it never did me that much excellent.

They are OK in the early stages of labour but by the end, I would reckon they are neither use nor ornament. Go for gas and air every time!!
Be careful if you are hiring one, they might not be too pleased when you launch it at the wall when it stops working lol

not for me and my degenerative disc bulge, seems a bit iffy using one for child birth. excellent ancient gas and air anyday

Hi ..yes i used one and it was the largest pile of crap ever.
The pains come from your tummy area but the tens machine is on your back,
It feels like you are getting burned so for me it added to the pains.
Given the choice again I would do it without anything.
Excellent Luck xx

hi honey. I have used a tens machine for various aches and pains, including childbirth, and I can honestly say that for everything else apart from childbirth, it takes the edge of the pain but please dont even consider it for childbirth. Gas and air or pethidene is far far more effective and this machine definately gets the thumbs down for this kind of pain. Also do reckon carefully about having a home birth. If things go straight forward then yes its fantastic but if theres anything that does go incorrect its far better to be in hospital where they can act on things straight away and keep you and your baby safe. Whichever you choose I hope all goes well for you and wish you and your new small one all the like and health in the world. xx

Hi,
I have never used a tens machine, and quite frankly never heard of one, BUT I have had 2 births with no pain medication, I have found a hot shower the best for pain, make sure you stay in for at least 10-15minutes before you blow it off as not working ( I found this out on the second birth, lol, it really worked) also the right frame of mind, I reckon, knowing it is a natural process and your body will let you know where you are and what is going on helps a lot, I also found, that concentrating on getting to the top of a contraction was fantastic, then feeling the relief of it lessing was always fantastic, I wish you the best of luck and franky if I can do it you will breeze through it, I am terrified of needles etc, lol, but can do this no probs! My thoughts and like are with you at this very special and exciting time!
Cheers Jen

I used a tens machine for my whole labour (a homebirth) and found it really excellent. I only had gas and air for an hour or so. I bought an Elle one but you can hire them. They aren’t much to hire so it’s worth a go. If you get it on early it should certainly help with the early stages.

Honestly, its a waste of time and money…they are really pretty rubbish. They really dont even touch the pain, I would look at other methods instead. Im not trying to be negative but if all these people are saying No, then you have to question why?? Goodluck and hope you find something useful to help you x

I’ve used one for years coz of a back problem and plotted to use it during birth.
NEVER use it if you’re not in labour when pregnant as it is perilous.
Don’t know how well it works coz my home birth was a quick one on the bathroom floor so no time lol
Excellent luck xx
